Experience

The best way to describe my experience with typography is running a marathon. Although it's been a while since I did marathons, I can clearly remember how it felt like. In a marathon, the 'short term goal' I give myself to continue on is the next water station. For typography, my 'short term goal' was to get the approval by my lecturer. I am aware that this sounds narcissistic, getting a 'good job' or 'improved', especially from a very meticulous lecturer, is as good as finally drinking a drop of water while running is sorching heat.

To be completely honest, there were times where I wake up and just think, "Yea, I'm going to give up on this module". Fortunately, I stayed strong and finally found the joy in typography - probably not as much as other people - but I can say that this experience was enjoyable. Will I do this again? Probably not, with the exception of creating a typeface. That was really fun.

Observations

With the tasks given, I was able to observe the complications of typography. In Task 1, I noticed how my classmates and lecturer would use word to express its meaning. The most amazing part is, they didn't even use colours! Besides that, I also started to note on the different ways typography has helped a design to communicate its content to its audience. I have become more senstitive to type nowadays, to the point where I would automatically judge them in my head when I see them, for example, it UI/UX, ads, etc.

Besides that, the requirements of the eportfolio - typography has the strictest format for each one - made me really sensitive to tiny deatils in a lot of stuff. For example, when I was doing a another project outside of this module, I was very picky on how everything was arranged. Of course, this was a good thing and I thank this module for that.

Findings

Throughout this semester, I found out how important time management is. The more you procrastinate, the more pain - and less sleep - you're going to get. Besides that, folder management is also very important, because you don't want your files to go missing ( ͡ಥ ͜ʖ ͡ಥ). Moreover, I realized how hard typography actually is. It's meticulous and requires a lot of time to fully immerse yourslef into this topic. Props to people who have, because I definitely haven't (okay, maybe around 60%?). Lastly, Typography takes a good design eye, and good observations skills, both in which I am still working on. So yeah, gotta put more effort in excelling those two things if I were to survive in the labour market in the future.
