Project Brief:

Research

As we had to do a packaging design for the product, I browsed through Pinterest to find references on how I can integrate minimalist and playful in our designs.

Fig 1.0 Research

For the packaging design above, I like the way its graphic elements are used, without having it overpower the main product name. Besides that, the green leaves display a sense of eco-friendliness, while its curves and placement brings a sense of energy and playfulness.

Fig 1.1 Research

For the packaging above, I enjoy the minimal design between the typography and its graphic elements. The colour combination betweeen the box colour and the plants are very consistent as well. Overall, this box gives a playful feeeling even though it looks very simple.

Fig 1.2 Research

The designer of the packaging above uses their graphic element as the centre point of the box. I believe we can reference this in our packaging because our client wanted to highlight the use of bamboo in their products.

Task

Week 7

When we first divided the task, I was in charge of making all the 3D Models for the animation. While I was busy with some work in other modules, Jo Min, our animator finished 3 of the models for me. Hence, I just worked on the last 2 models.

I useed Blender to create the models, starting with a simple cylinder shape, from there, I modelled it according to the product photo our client sent us.

After UV Mapping and unwrapping the model, I imported a bamboo texture to create the bamboo feel. Afterwards, I just adjusted the levels in Blender for the metallic parts of the tumblers. When the models were done I sent them to Jo Min and she did some fixes to maintain the consistency between mine and her models.

Week 8

Fig 1.6 Initial Packaging Idea

For the packaging, we thought of making it reusable. Before this, our client preferred boxes that can split open entirely to create a flat piece of paper with information on it, which the customer can then refold to be reused as a storage box.

Fig 1.6 Final Packaging Idea

After giving it some thought, we decided that it wasn't really user friendly since they had to destroy and reesemble the box again. So, I came up with the idea of making it as an interactive and reusable slide box packaging. The bottle will be placed inside, along with a strip of paper that can be folded into a divider. After taking the bottle out of the box, customers can DIY and use the packaging box as a tea organizer, etc. Our client agreed on this idea and we proceeded to design the packaging.

My design output:

Week 9

This week we had a meeting with the group to finalise our presentation slides and fix some of our designs according to feedback from our lecturer.

Week 10

This is presentation week! I finished up my blog post and added all the necessary files into our Google Drive.

Feedback

Week 7

  • Project document and presentation was done well, but the group is still a bit behind
  • The logo with full "Green Earth Movement" might not be seen, because of typeface and size
  • Need to prototype the packaging and test, more people have to work on it.
  • Need to find the exact file types that they need.

Week 9

Website:
  • Needs to adjust the type justification, make it to the left instead
  • The random pink colour in the trailer makes it look inconsistent.
Animation:
  • Try to find ways to showcase the first keyframe better, maybe can play with the typography
  • The pink colour in the customisation frame is inconsistent with our art direction
Packaging:
  • Good idea on how to solve the resusable part

Reflection

Experience

One of the main things that I experienced this task was creating the packaging design for the product. As I am not from the graphic design course, I have never done any packaging designs before. I now understand how much thought and effort is required to make a functional packaging while also maintaing its visual appeal.

Observation

This doesn't really involve design, but more on communication. I observed that effective communication is really important in making a brand succeed. For example, my team only found out that we were working with 3 different SOMAC groups recently and all of them had their own art direction and brand identity. Hence, resulting in a lot of miscommunication among the 3 schools.

Findings

For findings, I found some new ways to create models faster in Blender. I am fairly new to this software as I've only been using Zbrush most times, so finding ways to make work more efficient is definitely a plus.
