Brief:
Task
On week 1, we were given the project brief - create an innovative SDG vision shaped by current design trends and emerging creative technology with “playfulness” at the heart of the experience.
After reading through the SDG Goals, I decided to use Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities as my main focus. Since, Entertainment Design being my background, I decided to use game creation as my output (It will also help lots with my portfolio :D). With the topic and output in mind, I started research on past games and how to innovate them to showcase the SDG.
Proposal (Week 1):
On Week 5, we had another proposal session. This time I finalised the moodboard and softwares that I was going to use:
As the weeks went by, I started redesigning the characters, however it took up too much time and I wasn't sure I was able to finish all of them on time. Hence, I decided to use free assets online and customise them according to the designs I had in mind for the father and daughter. These were the original designs I had for them:
Another reason why I thought that I wouldn't have enough time was that I faced some issues with Gamemaker studio, espcially with the tiles and code. What's worse is there are minial amount of tutorials online for it. Hence, I switched to Unity.
The progression from Week 5 to Week 14 can be seen here:
On Week 15, I finally had time to finalise this game. However, just to note, I was unable to fix the daughter's movement and she ended up being able to pass through walls? Here are the progression slides for more information:
Final Output
Game download:
Download the entire "A Father's Journey" folder > Open "A Father's Wish.exe" in the folder > Have fun!
Gameplay Video:
Feedback
Week 1:
- Idea 1 is the best, but you might have to change the gameplay to ensure you are able to finish the project by end of semester.
- Can use RPG Maker to create the game.
- Use your illustration skills to make nice cut scenes
- Make sure the gameplay supports the storyline and allows space for the players to feel their emotions.
Week 5:
- Everything seems good
Week 6:
- dad's initial design looks like.. asian mario HAHA
- the mom's ribbon is a nice touch.
- and yes, pointy hair makes a difference in the design
- Make sure to ask Mr Razif how to fix your unity!!!
Reflection
One word, woah!
When they added the word exploration into the module they actually meant it! I was both happy and stressed while doing this project. Happy, because I have always wanted to make a game, and I actually had a chance to use Unity..
Stressed, because, well, Unity. The amount of times I just stared at my computer going, "Huh?" May well be listed into the Guiness Book of Records.
Just psa to my juniors out there who are planning to make a game, you will need some time to get used to the software, especially the coding (unless you are part of the UI/UX gang, then it should be easier). For my Entertainment Design juniors, good luck! But, trust me, once you get hooked on Unity, you will think of so many other projects you'd wanna try in the future (me right now frfr).
All in all, I am so so so grateful for Ms Anis to allow for a week's extension. Otherwise I wouldn't have accomplished what I targeted for in this project.
