Task
Fig 1.0 Character Sheet |
For this task, we are told to block out our chosen character using Zbrush. The character above was my chosen character. It is the "Classroom Prodigy" skin from my Character Design class.

After confirming our character, we were required to block it out using Zbrush. I started off with rectangles and cylinders to create the overall structure of the character. Afterwards, I shaped it according to the muscle curvatures.

One issue I faced was the gender of the character. At first glance my character looks more like a girl instead of a boy. I made a poll to my friends and they also agree that the character looks like a girl. I was able to remedy this with advice from Mr Kannan regarding the chest shape.

Another hurdle I faced was creating the ears for the charater but I managed to fix it with the help of Mr Kannan.

For this process, I was like a rabbit. I jumped here and there from the face to the shirt, to the pants, and so on. Mainly because I think I'm easily distracted D:. In the above photo, you can see me creating the shirt and pants by extracting masks from the main body.

Later, I resumed jumping from one subtool to another and added other clothing details like the vest, necktie, socks, etc. I also made some adjustments to the character's face.

Afterwards I rendered the hair. Not gonna lie, I loved making hair, by far my most favourtie process. Here I found out how important hair is to a person! Let's hope I don't go bald in the future after all this stress I've been dealt with aha :).

When all the details are done, I started polypainting according to the character sheet. Tip: If you press c Zbrush will pick up the colour your cursor is on~ Unfortunately I found this out a bit late and spent a good amount of time typing in each rgb level to get the colour I want.

With the colours chosen, I decided to pose my character. My initial thought was to pose his reaching out a book from a bookshelf, since he is a "childhood prodigy", suely he would read a lot. However when I added the bookshelf it just looked really odd? Maybe it was because I posed him weirdly. After testing it and hating it again, I switched the pose to him lecturing or leading his class. He would stand in front of a pedestal with a blackboard at the back. I think this suits the "childhood prodigy" trope I set for him.
Final Outcome
Model Render
Moder Render with Background
*Note: My zbrush keep crashing over and over again, which was weird as I have used it with multiple applications open before and it still worked, so I wasn't able to take closeup pictures of the final character with background.

Feedback
- For the ear, you can use the 3d gizmo and move it according to the shape you want
- Remember to use backface mask on you brushed if you are doing thin layers
- A man's chest is straight, not v shaped.
- Make sure all the assignments are compiled and attached to the respectuve assignments as requessted.
- Don't forget to do your eportfolio.
Reflection
Honestly, I think I can do better if I managed my time better. However hard this module was it was pretty fun. Mr Kannan was wuite laxed with the deadlines and his advice worked well. Although I do wish we could have a weekly assingment tracker instead of just a list of stuff he wants for each submission. Overall , my experience with this project was great and I would definitely model more characters during the break.
