Project 1: Audio Editing Exercises
Instructions
Task
1. Audio - Sound for Visual
For this task, we were given a video clip from the movie "Soul". In the video, the man is talking to a cat while remisniscing on his time on Earth. Were were then required to identify the visual components from the video clip that needs sound.

For the voice of the man and the cat, I decided to record the voiceovers on my phone because the microphone on my laptop is bad. It took a few tries to get the emotion and timing right. However, I was still pleased at the recordings I had.

After importing the voiceovers from my phone, I started compiling them to the video. For sounds that I could not record myself, i.e. leaves rustling, cars passing by, city ambient sound etc, I downloaded from freesound.org.

2. Audio - Sound Shaping
For this task, we were given a tutorial on how to use the parametric equalizer in Adobe Audition. Here we were taught how to edit sounds to create a certain environment/ vibe to the original audio.
In total, we were tasked to do five different sound shaping exercies:
- Voice of phone call.
- Voice coming from inside of closet.
- Voice of big stadium.
- Voice of toilet/bathroom.
- Underground cave.
Final Output
3. Audio - Sound Shaping
For this exercise, we were first taught about the four important sound design techniques:
- Time stretching/ compression
- Pitch Shifting
- Reversing
- Layering

| Fig 1.2 Explosion (08/07/22) |
For the explosion sound, I tested a few effects and found that the reverse definitely did sound like the start of a bomb. Hence I placed in in front before the original explosion. Besides that, I also added some echoes to the sound with a lower pitch, this gavea form of reverb or more like "the aftermath" of the bomb. Afterwards, I tweaked the reverse sound a bit more by lowerig down the pitch in an extreme manner and it helpe to connect the start and ending sound of the bomb.

I ahd the same process for the three punches where I played around with the effects and try to compile them into something nice. Besides pitch, I also tweaked the audio with the parametric equalizer.

For the last audio, I chose the line "fried noodles" and tried to reverse it. To my surprise, it sounded a lot like an alien! i then made a few for tweaks to the audio and it was ready to be exported.
Final Output
Reflection
The audio exrcises was really fun. I especially enjoyed the first exercise where we could create our own voiceovoer for the character. Although I learned a lot on the effects we could use in Adobe Audition, I still think there is some room for improvement as I'm still not familiar with the UI. I believe that if I were to work on it more, I would have a firmer grasp on how to fully utilise the software.
