Project 2: Motion Graphic

Visual Research
At the start of this project, Mr Martin assigned us to create a moodboard on what style we wanted to go for with the project. What style would suit the audience? What colour scheme should be implemented, etc. were questions we had in mind. After some browsing we found 3 types of styles that we liked:
Fig 1.0 Moodboard (09/01/22) |
After some discussions, we went with the first art style, mainly because it has vibrant colours and the vectors they use are easier to animate than the other art styles without skimping on the quality.
Fig 1.1 Style Frames (11/01/22) |
With an art style in mind, we created some style frames of the more 'sensitive' parts of the video. In my case, it was the scene with vaginal sex. I wanted to avoid making it too explicit (so it doesn't end up being actual porn >:o ), so I took insipation from The Sims, where the 'Woohoo' scenes are them under a blanket with fireworks.
Idea Exploration

Fig 1.3 Frame 14 Sketch (20/01/22) |
For frame 14, it talked about how sperm travels through the uterus into the egg, and could stay inside the body for up to 6 days. To visualize this process, I decided to sketch sperm swimming to an egg and a cafe scene where they were just chilling waiting for the egg.
Fig 1.4 Frame 15 Sketch (22/01/22) |
For this frame, it touched on best days to get pregnant and what will happen if you don't get pregnant. So, I used a calendar to showcase the dates and arrows leading in a circle to show the repeated period cycle.

When the sketched were aproved, I dived into Adobe Illustrator to finalize the frames. It was a bit hard at the start, mainly because I had to follow the specific art style we chose. To make things easier, our group shared .ai files with one another on the common elements we used, e.g uterus, woman, man, etc. I ended up switching the design for the sex scene because this angle was easier to animate.
Fig 1.6 Frame 14 Illustrations (18/02/22) |
On Frame 14, I resketched the ideas and switched the concept of sperm and astronauts floating in the uterus, mainly because the background we shared looked a lot like space. This took the most time in terms of illustrating because I had to redo everything by scratch (big thanks to Kah Man for the egg vector tho!)

In my final frame, I reused my pregnant lady element from before and switched it up with a tick to show a confirmed pregnancy. Everything else is similar to the original sketch.
Fig 1.8 Animation process (19/02/22) |
After all the illustrations were confirmed, I moved everything to Adobe After Effects to start my animation. I didn't take a lot of screenshots here, but the most interesting parts I did was walking and floating in space animations (You'll see in a bit :>)
Final Outcome
Frame 13-15 animation:
After finalizing the animation on After Effects, I also used Premier Pro to add some sound effects and further enhance the video.

Feedback
- Remember to keep the art style constant throughout the video.
- For the sperm in a cafe part, maybe you can switch up the other scenes close to it to stay with the theme.
- Very colourful illustrations, nice!
- Add sound effects but make sure the sound effects do not overpower the voice over.
Reflection
At the start of this project, I was terrified.
Why? Because I suck at animating, I'm unfamiliar with the software, and all in all the thought of animating is just scary to me. However, I proceeded the project the benefit of the doubt and marched forward.
Thank God I did.
I am quite happy with how everything turned out, the audio may neee some improvement but the animation itself was something I never thought I could do. My group members were also very supporting throughout the project, sharing opinions and .ai files with each other to make illustrating more efficient.
All in all, great project, made me learn so much, LIKE SO MUCH. After Effects is not that scary (except for the part where it crashes for no reason and you have to redo everything from scratch).
Cheers!
