Week 1
Introduction to Information Visualization
- We live in a visual informtaion culture
- Map-making and visual depiction > thematic cartography > statistics and statistical graphics > applications and innovations in different fields
- Visual information is responsible with the rise of statistical thinking and widespread data collection for planning and commerce

- The ultimate goal:
- Reveal the intricacy of the world in uncomplicated terms that are simple to comprehend.
- Add knowledge to the information it displays through spatial, quantitative and chronological relationships.
What is Motion Graphics?
- Motion graphics means graphics in movement
- Composition + Animation
- Composition = Graphics + Typography
- Animation = Movement + rhythmn
Step 1: Write a script that tells a story
Step 2: Storyboard while you brainstorm the visual treatment
- Sequence of sketches provide visual references for key scenes
- Visual script:
- Breakdown (Scenes + running times)
- Moodboard
- Organize inspirations & references
Step 3: Take your storyboards into design
Step 4: Animate the final designs
Instructions
Visual Research
For this exercise, we were given a few examples from past students.
Fig x.x Example 1 (04/01/21) Source: Lecture |
The circular placements of the buttons attracts the attention of viewers, while keeping the information clearly visualized.

The legos are grouped really neat and in order. It provides a straightforward approach to quantifying the objects.
Idea Exploration

After receiving our buttons, I cateogrized them into number of holes, surface texture and size.
I used a sample from a senior's work as the main body structure for my final presentation.

Fig x.x Process 3 (08/01/22) |
Since the buttons have a round shape, I wanted to incorporate it in my design by using the as indicators for the total in each category. Afterwards, I would place a representative of the category in in middle of the circle. However, it started to look very unorganized.
Fig x.x Process 4 (08/01/22) |
To make it more organized, I created a table to keep the circles in place and ease the thought process of the viewer.

At one point, I decided to try out a new style. I took inspiration from the table style and incorporated in here.
Final Outcome

For the final outcome, I preserved the second idea but swtiched out some colours to make it less messy. Besides that, I brought in the title from the first idea mainly for aesthethic purposes.

Feedback
- It will be hard for people to count the rings around the button one by one. Should add some label that shows the amount on the side.
Reflection
This exercise was hard and easy at the same time? Categorising them was a breeze, I could've just made a regular table and be done with it but it felt too generic. I had so many ideas in my head and it was hard to pinpoint one that I really wanted to go with. Thank heavens my indecisive self finally chose one (maybe the due date inspired it, who knows? ͡• ͜ʖ ͡• ). Overall, interesting exercise, never expected myself to take SO LONG to finish it.
