Lectures

Realism

  • Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality".
  • Almost always takes non-exotic and non extraordinary subeject matter and theme.
  • No need to think outside of the box - not "real".

Surrealism

  • Explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream images.
  • Often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality.
  • Defies logic
  • Strange images and bizarre juxtapositions.

Dadaism

  • Anti war art movemnent
  • Art work is satirical and nonsensical in nature

Capturing Your Dream (Digital Surrealism)

1. Sketch it out
  • Take a piece of paper
  • Draw your vision out
  • Don't finesse any details yet
2. Find reference images
  • Gather images that directly relate to what you have in mind
3. Mindset during creation
  • Surrealism is best when it's convincing enough that it could be real
  • When you try to approach something challenging, you will learn the skills you may need for next time to make it work.
  • The worst thing you can do is be afraid and back off from your idea, because you will never learn that way.

Reflection

I think this lecture was really mind- opening, especially in terms of surrealism. Throughout my creative journey I had always looked into realism, to try and make my artwork look as real as possible and find logic in what I am creating (maybe partly because of my science background). This class made me want to think outside of the box, and embrace the dreams and illusions I had in my mind when finding inspiration for my work.

Besides that, the advice of not being afraid of your idea really resonated with me. I am someone who wants perfection and if I know that I can't achieve the idea I want, I would just throw it away and do somthing I'm more comfortable with. So, being told that it will hinder my learning was definitedly something I needed to think about.
