Adjustment Layer
What is Adjustment Layer?
- Non- destructive image editing tools that add colour and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently chaging its pixels.
- Edit and discard your adjustments or restore your original image at any time.
Basic Understanding of Adjustment Layer
- When you add an adjustment to your image, a new layer will appear over your image and a Properties panel specific to the type of adjustment you've selected will pop up.
- The Properties panel will allow you to modify your adjustment later, which in turn will modify your image.
Brightness/ Contrast
- The brightness slider is for adjusting the highlights in your image and the Contrast slider is for adjusting the shadows in your image.

Level
- Adjust the levels of the shadows, midtones and highlights.

Curves
Curves let you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image, and is the most powerful and precise tool for editing the tones in an image.

Selective Colour
- Selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors in your image.
Filters
What is a Filter?
There are filters to change colour, add blur or create completely new image effects.

Practical: Digital Collage
Week 3 - Pen Tool Exercise (Best Composition)
Fig 1.4 Week 3 Best Composition (09/09/21) |
This collage was inspired by sci-fi novels. It shows how humans are trying to defend the Earth with a shark cannon and the aliens counter-attacking with humanoids they’ve created. “Man against wild” but reversed?! Composition wise, I used the Rule of Thirds with the fencer and alien ship in the intersection points.
Week 4 - Adjustment Layers and Filters
Fig 1.5 Final Adjustments and Filters (16/09/21) |
One thing I noticed in the first composition was how dull the colours looked, especially the background. I tried using some gradients to accentuate the design but none of the precomposited gradients were suitable. Hence, I used the brush tool and created one myself and used the blending brush to mix them like a “galaxy”. Besides that, the original “UFO” was snipped from the old projector photo and it looked too rustic to be a UFO. So, I modified the levels and whitened it to look more modern.
For the bottom elements like the fencer and their weapon, I placed a green tint to show the surrounding light reflecting on its surface. Overall, I learned how adjustment layers can make the composition look less dull. For example, adding contrast, tint and even switching the element into an entirely new colour (like the spaceships on the side).
Feedback
- That's a good practice. You may choose the WEEK 4 exercise for your PROJECT 1: Digital Collage later in Week 5. Thanks!
Reflection
- This was an interesting experience because I am always confused as to what curves, levels etc meant (I've always just played around with it and hope for the best). I think this was an important practice for upcoming projects.
