Lectures
Week 5 - Chiarascuro
What is Chiarascuro?
- Chiara - Bright
- Scuro - Dark
- The use of light and dark to create the illusion of 3D volume on a flat surface.
- Example:

Why Chiarascuro is used?
- Increase dramatic tension
- Create Sensational Effect
- Pull your attention to a subject in an intense way
- Create a tasteful composition of negative vs positive spaces
- Great study of form and value
Week 5 - Rhytmn & Movement
- Maximise overlaps
- Establish patterns and rhytmns
How to Start Practicing?
- "Good artists immitate, great artists steal." - Pablo Picasso
- Study and refer to artworks

If you've watched Mulan, you would definitely know what scene this is. This was after all the training and she could finally climb up the pole. She showcased her strength and got recognition by the other soldiers. It's definitely a decisive moment for the movie.

This poster wasn't really much of a decisive moment for the movie "Ratatouille", but the composition of the poster is really good in my opinion. I used chiascuro in the design, showcasing light and dark between black and orange.
Idea Exploration and Description
Sketches
For this project, I used Attack on Titan (AOT) as the main theme and came up with 3 designs for the decisive moment project. WARNING: SPOILERS
Design 1
Fig 1.6 Design 1 Sketch (14/10/21) |
In this scene, Eren, the main character, uses the Founding Titan's powers to unleash all of the Wall Titans while creating a body for himself that is even larger than the Colossus Titan. He then uses the Founder's power to telepathically communicate with all of the Subjects of Ymir, informing them of his plans to destroy the world outside Paradis Island.
Design 2
Fig 1.7 Design 2 Sketch (14/10/21) |
Grisha, Eren's father, kept the basement locked from Eren, but after the fall of Wall Maria, Grisha gave his son the key and entrusted him to retake Wall Maria and reach it. To find the secrets hidden in the basement was one of the goals of the Survey Corps during the expedition that led to the Battle of Shiganshina District and the famous quote "Give up on your dreams and die".
Design 3
Fig 1.8 Design 3 Sketch (14/10/21) |
In this episdoe, Eren recalls that he used to believe that on the other side of the Wall, they would find freedom. But now, having explored beyond the Walls and seen his father's memories, all Eren can think of are the enemies that await them. Eren points out into the distance and wearily asks: If they kill all their enemies on the far side of the ocean, will they finally be free? (also a famous quote in AOT).
Process
After receiving feedback from the lecturers, I decided to use Design 2 in this project.
Fig 1.9 Design 2 Process 1 (20/10/21) |
After transfering the sketch into Adobe Illustrator, I started to digitize the art properly. To make my composition better, I used the Golden Ratio and placed the key in a close position to the end of the curve. I also took screenshots of the anime and manga as reference to draw the basement and key.

I tried to get the title from the actual anime and manga, but I couldn't crop it properly. Due to this, I went onto google to find a Japanese typeface that has the same traits as the title. Fortunately, I found one called Genkai Mincho, and installed it into my device.

Testing out the typeface.
Fig 2.2 Design 2 Process 4 (28/10/21) |
Fig 2.3 Design 2 Process 5 (28/10/21) |
I tested out several colours that would suit the poster and make it eye-catching.
Fig 2.4 Design 2 Process 6 (29/10/21) |
I tried out some textures and also added som details onto the basement.
Fig 2.5 Design 2 Process 7 (30/10/21) |
At first, I wanted to do frame by frame animation, but at one point my heart said, "Yea nah, this ain't it".
Fig 2.6 Design 2 Process 8 (30/10/21) |
Hence, I used timeline animation (way more fun in my opinion ▀̿ ̿ ͜ʖ ͡▀̿ ̿ ).
Final Outcome

PDF:
For the final outcome, I used some textures on the borders and the floor. I kept the original golden ratio composition in my deisgn and also added some tiny hightlights onto the key to give it a more solid look.
Animation:
Fig 2.8 Decisive Moment Final Outcome Gif (31/11/21) |
For the animation, I tried to animate the reflective light from the key but it just looked terrible. So, I took that out and just used the original key. Since most of Eren's scenes have him running/ on a horse, I wanted the key to move as if he was wearing it while riding a horse. Since they mostly ride on dirt ground, I made the movement slightly bumpy as well.
Feedback
- Design 2 is good, and the animation should not be too hard if it's a swinging key.
- The typeface used for the poster needs to be clear.
- Drawing an actual character will take a long time to animate and draw, can consider just taking the silhoutte.
- Can take the title from the actual story.
Reflection
This project was fun to do, especially since I can insert one of my favourite manga/ anime in it. The hardest part in my opinions was to create the textures for the wooden panels, because it's like a chaotic neutral? The process that took the longest was the animation, mainly because I'm pretty new at it so it was hard to get the timing right and how the items are supposed to move (basically my animation sense is as good as a todler's ಥ ͜ʖ ͡ಥ) but it was a fun experience to learn. I'm grateful that Ms Anis allowed me more time to complete the project otherwise my animation would definitely be like a todler's ;-;.
